How to make a too big skirt fit So I found this skirt in Primark for £1... £1!!! But it was a size 20, I bought it anyway. The fantastic thing about having some basic sewing skills is that you can find a bargain item and adjust it to fit you. This can be a dramatic change like this size 20 to a size 10 or it can be small adjustments to make it fit exactly right. In this post will show you how to resize a simple skirt. The skirt is made of stretchy, bodycon fabric and has an elastic waistband. This fabric is really good to begin with as it is easy to sew and doesn't fray. When beginning to sew, projects like this are great to start with as you don't need to worry about zips, darts, pleats or anything difficult. We can work up to that later:) Its super easy, seriously you can do it! So here's what you need: Pins Thread (one brightly coloured one for tacking and one the same colour as the skirt for sewing) Needle Scissors Sewing Machine (you can hand stitch if you don't have a machine) A similar skirt that you already own that fits you well Step 1: Turn your skirt inside out and lay your well-fitting skirt on top of it (sorry didn't take a photo of this step) Step 2: Pin your new skirt following the shape of your well-fitting skirt. Step 3: Try it on! It is very important to always try on the clothes before sewing or cutting. It will save you a lot of time/heartbreak later on. Put it on inside-out so that if you need to adjust the pins you can easily do so while you are wearing the skirt. Make sure it fits exactly how you want it to. Remember that the elastic band needs to fit snugly around your waist but be wide enough to pull over your hips. Step 4: Tack the skirt together (pink thread) in place of the pins. Try it on again to be sure it fits perfectly. Step 5: Sew the skirt together (black thread). Use a standard stitch close to the tacking thread. If using a sewing machine, follow it with a zigzag stitch to stop fraying.
If you don't have a sewing machine don't worry, just do a backstitch. This kind of fabric wont fray anyway. Step 6: Cut away the excess fabric Step 7: Flip the skirt the right way and you are good to go! |
